Background

The city of Sioux Falls had two growth challenges to address. A city operated health care clinic needed to share patient health care records and data across multiple facilities. Also, the city water department needed to monitor SCADA information, provide Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and bolster security with remote video surveillance from three remote water reservoirs.

Like any municipality, Sioux Falls is facing spending restrictions and needed these solutions in place rapidly. For assistance in developing a solution, they called Calhoun Communications.

Solution

The IT team in Sioux falls knows how to enhance and optimize their network, says Tony Carpenter, Vice President, Calhoun Communications. Because of significant wireless activity in the unlicensed 5 GHz spectrum, the selected Point-to-Point links using the 4.9 public safety spectrum. Using the Link Planner tell, Calhoun Communications and the city IT Network Administrators developed the network architecture.

What we did

1

PTP link was deployed to transfer patient records and provide data connectivity

3

PTP links provide Line of Sight and Non-Line of Sight connectivity to the camera locations miles away.

We understand wireless communications, and had a n Non-Line of Sight challenge that we thought could not be done. The Cambium PTP solution connected right away and has been working flawlessly since. It connects over water, through trees and comes close to penetrating dirt.

Results

  • The network was installed almost a year ago and has worked as predicted through the summer and winter months.
  • The clinic are able to share information reliably and meet HIPAA information privacy security requirements.
  • The city has simultaneous SCADA and voice access to the remote reservoirs, along with pan/tilt/zoom video surveillance for security.
  • The network was installed in a fraction of the time and cost of wire or fiber based technologies and fits within the constrains of the city’s budget.
